It’s the old adage: you are what you eat. If you eat healthy, you’ll be healthy. You wouldn’t fill a Bentley with cheap gas. So why would you fill your body with junk? “The number one thing I like to teach is that nature makes you healthy,” says Dr. Cate Shanahan, board certified family physician and author of Deep Nutrition and Food Rules. “It’s toxic foods that make us more susceptible to illnesses.”
As summer rolls into fall, our diets tend to change. No longer do we opt for those lighter foods like fruits and salads. We prefer those warm, filling meals that make us feel nice and cozy.
Well, good news: you can still eat healthy without losing those bigger, meat-packed meals. Eating healthy doesn’t mean living off grass and cabbage. “There’s a huge movement rebelling against the wrong-headed typical advice,” says Shanahan, referencing diets that cut meat out all together.

So here are a few foods you should be eating:
Meats on the Bone
Cooking meats on the bone allows more nutrients to be absorbed into the meat and, in turn, supply your body with more healthy nutrients. “It's the collagen that is good for your joints, skin, and gastrointestinal system,” says Shanahan. “It involves slow cooked meats, stews, whole roasts, and soups and you aren't going to want to do that in warmer weather,” says Shanahan.

Fermented Foods
Foods such as yogurt and even pepperoni are fermented. These foods help fight harmful bacteria and help prevent a wide range of infections. “It's a huge part of our nutritional heritage that's almost completely unavailable,” says Shanahan.
Sauerkraut is another fermented food. Try this pork and kraut recipe for a boost of taste and health.
Organ Meats
Liver and other organ meats contain omega-3 and other essential nutrients most people lack, says Shanahan.
Once you start eating these, you’ll experience all kinds of health benefits¾especially an added boost to your immune system, which will help you fight off germs and keep you from catching colds and other viruses.
Although you may need to suck it up to try something like liver, the goal is to learn to enjoy these meats. Shanahan suggests sharing it with others at first. “The secret to making it work so you actually like the stuff one day is that you have to have only two bites at a time, just like a baby,” says Shanahan.
